I have received above 35 announcements such as this, worded almost exactly the same manner. The senders have acted astonished and upset that I didn’t jump to reap the benefits of this request.
Let us go through the dilemmas in this invitation from the marketing point of view.

Why would I desire to be part of their system? The request does not say who they’re, who they have access to and how I would reap the benefits of their system.
* What is Linked In, how does it work and what are the advantages of using it? Nobody has yet explained this clearly within their request. You cannot expect that some body receiving this invitation understands what you are asking them to join or how it’d be advantageous to them. It would be useful to have a sentence or two explaining how it works and mentioning a particular effect anyone behind the request enjoyed from membership. It may be that people think that since ‘basic membership is free,’ the normal individual of this invitation may go-ahead and join. But even though it will not charge money, joining would take time. You still require to ‘sell’ people o-n having a free activity, specially with respect to an activity or business which may be different to them.
* Nobody took some time to head off possible misunderstandings or objections for this membership. As a non-member of Linked-in, I’m anxious that joining would open me up to lot of e-mail and phone calls in-which I’d have no interest and that would spend my time. Again, you can’t think that something free is therefore enticing; you need to imagine why somebody may have doubts or dismiss the idea and address those questions.
* Using a processed request that’s almost exactly the same as everyone else’s doesn’t produce a great feeling. You’d want to give your own personal stamp to it, even though the written text provided by Linked In were effective, which it is not.
Apart from being irritated that they are apparently encouraging visitors to send invitations that make little sense, I’ve nothing against Linked In.
